  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    A boat with a valid federal or other-state number may operate in Oregon for up to 60 consecutive days. If the boat remains after that reciprocity period, apply for the Oregon number within the following 10 days. Do not use the visitor period for a boat moored in Oregon or once Oregon is the state of principal use.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Oregon titles and registers every motorboat regardless of length and every sailboat at least 12 feet long. For a boat from a title state, submit the released original title and Oregon application; for one from a non-title state, submit the prior registration card, bill of sale, and application.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    Arrange a Marine Board HIN inspection for a homebuilt boat, a boat never titled or registered, a boat from a non-title state, or a boat with an incorrect hull number. Stop at every open Oregon boat-inspection station when transporting the boat, and use the current nonresident AIS or waterway permit until Oregon registration replaces that visitor document.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Apply through the State Marine Board, its online store, or an authorized registration agent. Handle the road trailer separately through DMV: when the combined boat-and-trailer weight is more than 1,800 pounds, the trailer must be titled and registered, while every road trailer must still meet Oregon equipment rules.

An operator of a motorboat over 10 horsepower needs a boater education card. Oregon honors a card from another state when it represents a NASBLA-approved course. Operators ages 12 through 15 need a card for any motorboat and adult supervision for more than 10 horsepower; children 11 and younger may not operate a motorboat.
