Virginia boat and trailer move

Move a Boat and Trailer to Virginia

Transfer the watercraft through Virginia DWR and the highway trailer through DMV without combining their titles, inspections, identifiers, or deadlines.

Use this order

Prepare the boat and trailer before the office visit

The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

A boat brought from another state may operate for up to 90 consecutive days on a current out-of-state registration. Complete the Virginia watercraft record before that period ends, and handle its trailer within the 30-day new-resident vehicle window.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

Virginia requires a title and registration for every watercraft propelled by machinery, including electric motors. A sail-only vessel longer than 18 feet requires a Virginia title even though it does not receive vessel registration solely for its sail power.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

The watercraft does not use the motor-vehicle safety inspection. Its trailer follows the separate Virginia brake and inspection rule, including inspection for a trailer with brakes or at least 3,000 pounds actual gross weight.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

Carry at least a temporary registration certificate before operating a Virginia-registered watercraft on state waters. Apply with the prior title or registration, ownership documents, hull identification number, and any applicable watercraft tax record.

Vehicle classification

Check the exact vehicle class

Virginia requires boating-safety education for personal-watercraft operators and for operators of Virginia-registered motorboats with motors of 10 horsepower or more. The boat and trailer remain separate DWR and DMV records.
