Move an RV or Motorhome to Virginia
Move an out-of-state motorhome through Virginia's title, registration, insurance, inspection, and personal-use license rules.
Prepare the RV or motorhome before the office visit
The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.
- 1. Check when the application becomes due
Title and register the motorhome within 30 days after moving to Virginia. Obtain the Virginia noncommercial driver license within 60 days, or the Virginia CDL within 30 days when the vehicle's actual use requires one.
- 2. Prepare the correct ownership record
Use Form VSA 17A with the out-of-state title. If the prior state did not issue a title for the vehicle, follow Virginia's new-resident path with the bill of sale and current registration in the owner's name.
- 3. Complete identification and inspection
A Virginia-registered motorhome needs the annual safety inspection and has no post-registration grace period. Confirm the separate Northern Virginia emissions rule for the exact fuel, model year, weight, and garaging locality before registration.
- 4. Register the correct vehicle class
Insure and title the motorhome before registration. Registration length, weight, local personal-property treatment, and any local sticker remain separate from a towed vehicle or trailer record.
Check the exact vehicle class
Virginia excludes a vehicle used solely for the owner's personal purposes, including personal recreational activity, from the commercial-motor-vehicle definition. Commercial, passenger-for-hire, or other use changes that analysis.
