Move a Motorcycle to Alabama
Move an out-of-state motorcycle through Alabama's 30-day registration, title-age, insurance, VIN, no-emissions, and Class M rules.
Prepare the motorcycle before the office visit
The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.
- 1. Check when the application becomes due
Register a noncommercial motorcycle with valid out-of-state registration within 30 days after it enters Alabama. A new resident may drive on the valid prior-state license for 30 days, so complete the license transfer within that same period.
- 2. Prepare the correct ownership record
Apply for an Alabama title before registration when the motorcycle is no more than 35 model years old. A motor vehicle more than 35 model years old is title-exempt, while a title held by a recorded lienholder follows Alabama's separate retained-title exception.
- 3. Complete identification and inspection
Have the motorcycle physically inspected because it is being titled or registered in Alabama for the first time. The licensing official or an appointed government or law-enforcement deputy verifies the VIN against the ownership document. Alabama does not require an emissions test.
- 4. Register the correct vehicle class
Register through the licensing office in the county of residence. The motorcycle must have Alabama liability insurance before registration, and the licensing official will verify the policy through the state system or request evidence. Registration also includes the applicable fee and county ad valorem tax.
Check the exact vehicle class
Confirm that Class M appears on the Alabama license before riding. A valid out-of-state license expired no more than one year generally transfers without a driver examination, but the motorcycle class must be carried into the Alabama credential; a first-time motorcycle applicant follows the Class M testing path.
