Move an RV or Motorhome to Alabama
Title and register a personal motorhome in Alabama while separating its 30-day filing, title age, VIN, insurance, tax, emissions, and CDL rules.
Prepare the RV or motorhome before the office visit
The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.
- 1. Check when the application becomes due
Register a noncommercial motorhome with valid out-of-state registration within 30 days after it enters Alabama, and transfer the driver license within 30 days of residency. Arrange the county title and VIN work before the outside registration expires.
- 2. Prepare the correct ownership record
Apply for an Alabama title when the self-propelled motorhome is no more than 35 model years old. An older motor vehicle is title-exempt. When a recorded lienholder keeps the current out-of-state title and ownership is unchanged, use Alabama's lienholder-held title exception rather than waiting for a paper title that may not be released.
- 3. Complete identification and inspection
Present the motorhome for the physical VIN and ownership-document inspection required at its first Alabama title or registration. The licensing official may appoint a government or law-enforcement deputy when the vehicle cannot reasonably be brought to the office. Alabama has no motor-vehicle emissions-testing prerequisite.
- 4. Register the correct vehicle class
Register in the county of residence with Alabama liability insurance, the ownership record, the title application when required, and the applicable declared-gross-weight fee and county ad valorem tax. Treat a travel trailer, fifth wheel, or towed vehicle as its own transaction.
Check the exact vehicle class
Alabama's commercial driver-license requirement does not apply to a vehicle used personally as a recreational vehicle even when it would otherwise meet the commercial-motor-vehicle definition. Commercial use, passenger service, or hazardous-material transport changes that result.
