  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Register a noncommercial trailer with valid out-of-state registration within 30 days after it enters Alabama. Use the separate 20-day clock only when the trailer was newly purchased or otherwise acquired, not as the new-resident deadline.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Title treatment depends on the trailer, not a simple weight line. Travel trailers and folding campers no more than 20 model years old are titled, as are goosenecks, fifth wheels, and other listed classes. Utility trailers, boat trailers, bumper-pull trailers, and trailers more than 20 model years old are title-exempt, but highway use still requires the proper registration unless another exemption applies.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    A trailer being titled in Alabama for the first time, and a title-exempt trailer being registered there for the first time, needs a physical VIN and ownership-document inspection. The licensing official or an appointed deputy compares the number on the trailer with the title, bill of sale, or other accepted record.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Register a privately owned utility or travel trailer through the county licensing office and obtain its separate trailer plate. A permanent trailer plate is limited to qualifying truck trailers, tractor trailers, and semitrailers; it is not available merely because the trailer is a utility trailer.

A trailer over 3,000 pounds manufactured or assembled after January 1, 1972 needs brakes on all wheels that apply automatically on breakaway and remain applied for at least 15 minutes. A trailer at or below 3,000 pounds avoids all-wheel brakes only when its wheel load is no more than 40 percent of the tow vehicle's gross weight and the combination meets the stopping standard.
