Indiana motorcycle move

Move a Motorcycle to Indiana

Move an out-of-state motorcycle through Indiana's 60-day title, VIN, insurance, registration, emissions, and endorsement rules.

Use this order

Prepare the motorcycle before the office visit

The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

Apply for the Indiana title within 60 days after becoming a resident and transfer the driver license within the same 60-day window. Start the title request early when a lienholder or electronic-title state must send a paper title.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

Bring the most recently issued out-of-state title. Request a printed copy first when the prior state uses electronic titles. If a lienholder keeps the title, submit Request for Title State Form 1014 through a BMV branch; a 30-day permit may be available while the branch waits for the title.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

Complete the VIN inspection at the BMV branch or have law enforcement complete State Form 39530 when the motorcycle cannot be brought to the branch. Motorcycles are exempt from the Lake and Porter county emissions program even when another household vehicle must be tested.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

Title and register the motorcycle at a BMV branch, keep the required insurance active, and carry any existing lien onto the Indiana title unless the lender supplies a valid release. Indiana treats a motorcycle as its own titled and registered vehicle, not as an attachment to another registration.

Vehicle classification

Check the exact vehicle class

A valid out-of-state motorcycle endorsement transfers after the Indiana motorcycle knowledge exam. A motorcycle-only license does not convert directly to a regular Indiana driver license with an endorsement; that path requires the learner-permit, 50-hour driving-log, drive-exam, and motorcycle-knowledge steps.
