Move an RV or Motorhome to Indiana
Title and register a personal RV in Indiana while separating its 60-day filing, lienholder, VIN, emissions, and driver-license questions.
Prepare the RV or motorhome before the office visit
The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.
- 1. Check when the application becomes due
Apply for the Indiana title within 60 days after becoming a resident and transfer the driver license within 60 days. Request any paper title immediately if the prior state holds it electronically or a lienholder controls it.
- 2. Prepare the correct ownership record
Bring the most recent out-of-state title, or the ownership record Indiana accepts when the prior state did not title the vehicle. Use State Form 1014 through a BMV branch when a lienholder keeps the title, and preserve the lien on the Indiana title unless the lender has released it.
- 3. Complete identification and inspection
Every travel trailer and RV needs an Indiana VIN inspection. A branch can inspect an accessible VIN, or law enforcement can complete State Form 39530. A vehicle registered as a recreational vehicle is exempt from the Lake and Porter county emissions program.
- 4. Register the correct vehicle class
Title and register the motorhome at a BMV branch with the required identity, Indiana-address, insurance, and ownership records. Treat every towed car, travel trailer, or other highway unit as a separate title and registration transaction.
Check the exact vehicle class
Indiana's CDL thresholds apply to commercial motor vehicles over the stated weight, passenger, or hazardous-material limits. Personal RV use does not become commercial merely because the vehicle is large, but commercial use, passenger service, hazardous materials, and the exact combination weight require a separate license review.
