Indiana trailer move

Move a Trailer to Indiana

Title and register a trailer in Indiana using its prior ownership record, trailer-specific VIN rule, separate plate, and 3,000-pound brake threshold.

Use this order

Prepare the trailer before the office visit

The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

Complete the Indiana title transaction within 60 days after becoming a resident. Gather the prior ownership record and determine whether the prior state titled this trailer before scheduling any VIN inspection.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

Bring the most recently issued out-of-state title. If the prior state did not require a title, bring its registration or other accepted proof of ownership instead. Do not assume a light trailer is title-exempt in Indiana; State Form 43753 and the assigned-VIN process apply only when their specific requirements are met.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

A utility or boat trailer does not need a VIN inspection when the prior state titled it, but it does when that state did not require a title. Every travel trailer and RV needs the inspection. Use State Form 12907 when an assembled trailer needs an Indiana-assigned VIN.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

Register the trailer separately from the tow vehicle and declare a gross weight that includes the empty trailer plus its heaviest intended load. A travel trailer remains a trailer transaction even when the motorhome or tow vehicle is already registered.

Vehicle classification

Check the exact vehicle class

A trailer or semitrailer with a gross weight of at least 3,000 pounds must have brakes adequate to control, stop, and hold it. The driver must be able to apply them from the cab, and the brakes must apply automatically if the trailer breaks away.
