Move a Motorcycle to Michigan
Move an out-of-state motorcycle through Michigan's immediate title, no-fault insurance, registration, and CY endorsement steps.
Prepare the motorcycle before the office visit
The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.
- 1. Check when the application becomes due
Apply for the Michigan title and registration as soon as Michigan residency begins. Michigan provides no new-resident grace period, and the driver license and motorcycle endorsement should be transferred at the same time.
- 2. Prepare the correct ownership record
Bring the original out-of-state title when it is available. If a lienholder keeps it, Michigan can accept a current registration, a registration expired less than 90 days, or another listed ownership record and issue Foreign Ownership-Registration Only instead of a Michigan title.
- 3. Complete identification and inspection
Match the VIN on the motorcycle to the title or accepted ownership record before the visit. Michigan's standard new-resident packet does not call for a routine safety inspection; an assembled, imported, salvage, or identity problem follows a separate review path.
- 4. Register the correct vehicle class
Obtain Michigan no-fault insurance before the Secretary of State visit because out-of-state insurance is not accepted. Bring the ownership record, insurance proof, identification, and every owner, or use an Appointment of Agent form for an owner who cannot attend.
Check the exact vehicle class
Tell the Secretary of State that the current out-of-state license includes a valid motorcycle endorsement. Michigan accepts the endorsement and waives the motorcycle knowledge and skills tests, but it will not transfer the CY privilege unless the applicant requests it.
