  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Register the trailer as soon as Michigan residency begins. Michigan has no new-resident grace period for vehicles, so confirm its empty weight and ownership evidence before the Secretary of State visit.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    A trailer with an empty weight of 2,500 pounds or more must be titled; a lighter trailer is registered but not titled. Every trailer coach, including a pop-up camper, fifth-wheel, or travel trailer, must be both titled and registered regardless of that general weight exception.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    An assembled trailer at least 2,500 pounds needs parts and ownership records, bills of sale, Form TR-34, a weight slip, and a law-enforcement Vehicle Number/On-Road Equipment Inspection before final Secretary of State inspection and VIN assignment. A lighter assembled trailer does not use that assembled-title process.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Register every highway trailer and obtain its permanent plate, which does not expire. Bring identification, the assigned title or prior registration, a manufacturer certificate or itemized bill of sale when applicable, lien release, and a certified weight slip when the ownership record does not show empty weight.

Do not use the 2,500-pound title line as the brake rule. Michigan separately requires all-wheel brakes on a new trailer sold in the state unless a trailer below 3,000 pounds stays within the statute's 40-percent tow-vehicle exception; a trailer at 15,001 pounds or more needs brakes on all wheels when operated on a highway.
