  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Get a North Carolina license or Temporary Driving Certificate first. NCDMV says registration becomes due when you accept work or the prior state's reciprocity period ends, usually 30 days, and the new-resident DMV changes must be complete within 60 days.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Use notarized Form MVR-1 with the out-of-state title. If a lender holds the title, NCDMV can accept the registration card when the lender can provide evidence of the registration and lien.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    North Carolina allows the initial new-resident registration without an inspection. The motorcycle needs an annual safety inspection before renewal, but state law exempts motorcycles from emissions inspection.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Bring the North Carolina license or Temporary Driving Certificate, North Carolina insurance, ownership record, and required application materials to a license plate agency. A motorcycle is titled and registered in the same general manner as a car.
