  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Get a North Carolina license or Temporary Driving Certificate before the title application. NCDMV says registration becomes due when you accept work or the prior state's reciprocity period ends, usually 30 days, and all new-resident DMV changes must be complete within 60 days.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Use notarized Form MVR-1 with the out-of-state title and disclose every lien. When a lender holds the title, NCDMV can accept a registration card while it obtains evidence of the registration and lien.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    The first North Carolina registration can be issued without an inspection. Before renewal, the motorhome needs an annual safety inspection. A qualifying gasoline motorhome in one of the emissions counties may also need emissions testing; diesel vehicles and vehicles over 8,500 pounds GVWR are emissions-exempt, not safety-exempt.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Bring North Carolina insurance, the license or Temporary Driving Certificate, and the ownership record to a license plate agency. Confirm the motorhome's plate class and taxes before treating a passenger-car estimate as final.
