    Handle the trailer with the other new-resident vehicle records after obtaining a North Carolina license or Temporary Driving Certificate. Do not assume the tow vehicle's registration also registers the trailer.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    North Carolina titles and registers a trailer in the same general manner as a car. Use the out-of-state title when the prior state issued one. If that state did not title and register the trailer, contact the State Highway Patrol Investigative Services Unit before applying.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    State law exempts a trailer under 4,000 pounds gross weight and a house trailer from the annual safety inspection. A registered trailer outside those exceptions can require the annual safety inspection before renewal.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Prepare notarized Form MVR-1, the accepted ownership record, identification, and the trailer's separate plate application. A no-title-state or homemade trailer can require registration history or an assigned identification number rather than a passenger-car document shortcut.

A ball-hitch trailer must use safety chains or cables strong enough to hold the trailer if the primary attachment fails. A qualifying locking-pin or fifth-wheel connection follows the separate statutory exception.
