  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Apply for the Illinois title and registration within 30 days after establishing residence. Keep a towed car or trailer on its own title, insurance, and registration schedule.

    Complete Form VSD 190 with the prior ownership document and any lienholder material Illinois accepts. The ordinary new-resident tax exemption depends on the vehicle having been titled and registered elsewhere for at least three months; leased and business vehicles follow different tax treatment.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    Illinois has no single emissions answer for every motorhome. Confirm the fuel, model year, weight, and registration address because the emissions program applies by vehicle class and affected area rather than by the RV label alone.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Register a personally used motorhome in the recreational-vehicle weight band that matches its gross weight and maintain liability insurance. Commercial ownership or use does not qualify for the personal recreational-vehicle classification.

Illinois waives the commercial-driver-license requirement when the recreational vehicle is used as a family or personal conveyance for recreation. The driver still needs the proper non-CDL Class A, B, C, or D for the vehicle's weight and configuration, and commercial use ends the exemption.
