Illinois trailer move

Move a Trailer to Illinois

Use the trailer's ownership record, gross weight, brakes, and recreational or utility use to prepare its separate Illinois transaction.

The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

Apply for the Illinois trailer title and registration within the 30-day new-resident vehicle window. The tow vehicle's plate does not register the trailer.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

Complete Form VSD 190 with the out-of-state title or other ownership material Illinois accepts for the exact record. Record the trailer's weight and use accurately because they determine the plate class and registration amount.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

A trailer over 3,000 pounds needs driver-operable brakes; a trailer from 3,001 through 5,000 pounds needs brakes on at least one wheel on each side. A trailer over 5,000 pounds also needs an automatic breakaway application, including a boat trailer.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

A personal camping or travel trailer uses Illinois recreational-trailer registration, with separate weight bands at 3,000, 8,000, and 10,000 pounds. A commercial or company-owned trailer follows a different classification.

Vehicle classification

Check the exact vehicle class

Illinois does not require separate liability insurance for a trailer, but the towing motor vehicle must remain insured. A boat and its highway trailer still use separate vessel and vehicle records.
