  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Title and register the trailer within the 30-day new-resident vehicle window. The tow vehicle's plate and registration do not cover the trailer.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Submit the out-of-state ownership document and Washington title application through a vehicle licensing office. Record the scale weight and use accurately; a homemade or unidentifiable trailer follows the State Patrol inspection and ownership-document process.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    A trailer over 3,000 pounds generally needs brakes on all wheels and an automatic breakaway system. A trailer at or below that weight can use the statutory exception only when the trailer load stays within 40 percent of the tow vehicle's gross weight and the combination meets stopping requirements.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Washington includes camp and tent trailers in the travel-trailer definition and titles and licenses them through the vehicle process. A qualifying cargo extension attached to both sides of a motorhome or travel-trailer frame is part of that frame rather than a separately titled trailer.
