New York boat and trailer move

Move a Boat and Trailer to New York

Register the motorized boat and its trailer as separate New York records with different titles, identifiers, inspection rules, and renewal periods.

Use this order

Prepare the boat and trailer before the office visit

The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

An out-of-state registered boat is exempt only while it is not kept in New York for more than 90 consecutive days. Complete the New York boat registration before that exemption ends.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

Use Form MV-82B and the accepted out-of-state ownership record. New York titles a registered boat only when it is model year 1987 or newer and at least 14 feet long; a Coast Guard documented boat receives registration stickers but no New York title.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

Match the hull identification number and documentation status to the boat application. The boat does not use a motor-vehicle safety inspection, but its highway trailer follows New York's separate annual trailer inspection.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

Register any boat with an electric or fuel-driven motor regardless of boat or motor size. A nonmotorized boat does not register, while every motorboat operator now needs an approved boating safety certificate.

Vehicle classification

Check the exact vehicle class

Boat registrations run for three years. The trailer uses Form MV-82, a separate VIN and ownership record, its own plate, and the title threshold for trailers over 999 pounds unladen.
