New York RV or motorhome move

Move an RV or Motorhome to New York

Register an out-of-state motorhome while keeping its title, insurance, inspection, driver endorsement, tow vehicle, and trailer requirements separate.

Use this order

Prepare the RV or motorhome before the office visit

The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

A new resident must obtain the New York registration within 30 days after establishing residence. Put New York insurance in place before applying because an out-of-state policy cannot support a New York registration.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

Use Form MV-82 with the accepted out-of-state ownership record. When a lienholder keeps the original title, prepare the certified copy or state verification and lienholder authorization that New York requires for registration without an immediate New York title.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

Complete the inspection during the 10-day extension issued with registration and renew it every 12 months. The emissions path depends on fuel, model year, GVWR, and county; qualifying diesel vehicles over 8,500 pounds registered in the New York Metropolitan Area receive a smoke-opacity test.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

Register the motorhome at DMV using its weight, vehicle class, residence county, fuel, ownership, and use. Keep a towed car or trailer on its own title and registration record instead of treating it as part of the motorhome.

Vehicle classification

Check the exact vehicle class

A Class D or E driver needs the personal-use R endorsement when the recreational vehicle is over 26,000 pounds GVWR or at least 40 feet long. The endorsement requires a road test in the size and type of vehicle the driver will operate.
