New York motorcycle move

Move a Motorcycle to New York

Register an out-of-state motorcycle with New York insurance, the correct ownership record, a motorcycle inspection, and the separate rider license.

Prepare the motorcycle before the office visit

The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

A new resident must register the motorcycle within 30 days after establishing New York residence. Secure New York liability insurance first because DMV does not accept out-of-state coverage for a New York registration.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

Use Form MV-82 with the out-of-state title or another accepted ownership record. If a lienholder keeps the original title, New York can register the motorcycle with the required certified title copy or state verification and lienholder authorization, but the New York title waits for the original.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

Use the 10-day inspection extension issued with the registration, then complete a motorcycle safety inspection at a station licensed for motorcycles. Motorcycles need inspection every 12 months but do not receive the passenger-vehicle emissions test.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

Bring the New York insurance card, ownership record, identity proofs, and applicable tax records to DMV. Motorcycle registrations run for one year and expire on April 30 rather than following the two-year passenger-vehicle cycle.

Vehicle classification

Check the exact vehicle class

Registration does not authorize the rider. A New York resident needs a Class M or MJ license or permit to operate the motorcycle, and the driver-license exchange is also due within 30 days of becoming a resident.
