New York trailer move

Move a Trailer to New York

Register the trailer by its year, unladen weight, maximum gross weight, construction, and use instead of combining it with the tow vehicle.

Use this order

Prepare the trailer before the office visit

The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

Handle the trailer within the new-resident vehicle-registration window. New York says light-duty trailer registration generally follows the vehicle process, while the trailer keeps its own one-year registration ending December 31.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

New York titles a model-year 1973 or newer trailer with an unladen weight over 999 pounds. An older or lighter trailer receives a transferable registration as its ownership record instead of a title.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

Complete the trailer's annual safety inspection at a licensed light-duty inspection station. The station hands the inspection sticker to the owner, who carries it in the vehicle towing the trailer.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

Prepare the accepted out-of-state ownership record, Form MV-82, and the trailer's maximum gross weight. A noncommercial light-duty trailer does not need a separate liability policy, while commercial and agricultural registrations follow the insurance rule stated by DMV.

Vehicle classification

Check the exact vehicle class

A homemade trailer uses the separate VIN and ownership process. Some machines that resemble trailers are exempt, so confirm the classification before applying or paying a registration fee.
