Move a Boat and Trailer to Pennsylvania

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    A boat with a valid out-of-state registration may operate in Pennsylvania for up to 60 days. Register it in Pennsylvania when the state becomes its primary place of use or use will exceed 60 days, and title and register the trailer within the 20-day resident vehicle window.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Submit Form REV-336 with the prior title or registration, ownership document, bill of sale when required, and hull identification number. A Pennsylvania title is required for certain 1997-and-newer inboard, personal-watercraft, and 14-foot-or-longer outboard boats, and whenever a previously titled boat makes Pennsylvania its state of primary use.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    The boat does not use Pennsylvania's motor-vehicle inspection. Its trailer follows PennDOT's separate rule, including periodic inspection above 3,000 pounds and a breakaway system when the trailer has brakes or exceeds that weight.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Register every powered boat through the Fish and Boat Commission for up to two years. An agent or Commission office can issue a 60-day temporary registration; a mailed application does not allow operation while it is pending.

Carry a boating safety certificate to operate a personal watercraft. A person born on or after January 1, 1982 also needs the certificate to operate a boat powered by more than 25 horsepower.
