Move a Motorcycle to Pennsylvania
Bring an out-of-state motorcycle into Pennsylvania and keep its title, insurance, inspection, and rider license in the right order.
Prepare the motorcycle before the office visit
The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.
- 1. Check when the application becomes due
Apply for the Pennsylvania title and registration within 20 days after establishing residency. The 60-day period for a Pennsylvania driver license does not extend the motorcycle's 20-day deadline.
- 2. Prepare the correct ownership record
Take a Pennsylvania photo credential and the out-of-state title to an authorized PennDOT agent, who completes Form MV-1. Pennsylvania requires the original title, so contact a lienholder early if it must release the document, and bring a VIN tracing or authorized verification.
- 3. Complete identification and inspection
Have the newly registered motorcycle inspected at an official Pennsylvania station within 10 days. A current registration, inspection, and insurance record is separate from the rider's Class M credential.
- 4. Register the correct vehicle class
Bring proof of Pennsylvania insurance with effective and expiration dates. A temporary plate is available only when the out-of-state title is submitted with the Pennsylvania title application.
Check the exact vehicle class
Obtain the Class M license or permit that matches the motorcycle. Pennsylvania's safety program and skills testing have separate rules for two-wheel, three-wheel, and lower-powered vehicles.
