Pennsylvania trailer move

Move a Trailer to Pennsylvania

Use the trailer's ownership record, body type, registered gross weight, brakes, and intended use to prepare its Pennsylvania title and registration.

Prepare the trailer before the office visit

The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

Apply for the trailer's Pennsylvania title and registration within the 20-day new-resident window. Do not treat the tow vehicle's plate as the trailer's registration.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

Take a Pennsylvania photo credential, the original out-of-state title, and a VIN tracing or verification to an authorized PennDOT agent for Form MV-1. If the trailer is used exclusively for recreation, confirm the recreational-trailer body type rather than assuming it from appearance.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

A trailer registered at 3,000 pounds or less is exempt from periodic safety inspection. Above 3,000 pounds, complete the new-registration inspection within 10 days; a trailer with brakes or over 3,000 pounds also needs an automatic breakaway system.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

Pennsylvania offers one-year, five-year, or permanent trailer registration only for the weight and body-type categories listed in its fee schedule. Choose the period after confirming the registered gross weight and whether the record is recreational or general trailer.

Check the exact vehicle class

PennDOT does not require a separate trailer insurance policy for registration. The boat carried on a trailer remains a separate Fish and Boat Commission registration and title record.
