  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    A nonresident-owned boat is registration-exempt only if it is used in Utah no more than 60 days in a calendar year and is registered in its home state when that state requires registration.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Title a 1985-or-newer boat unless an exemption applies. Canoes are not titled. An inflatable boat without a motor is exempt; with an outboard motor, it is title-exempt only at 25 horsepower or less. Separately title a 1985-or-newer outboard motor over 25 horsepower and the road trailer when required.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    A first Utah registration requires a HIN inspection on Form TC-661 unless the boat is new and was acquired from an in-state dealer or manufacturer. Stop at open watercraft inspection stations, remove drain plugs during highway transport, and complete decontamination when required.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Register the boat when Utah requires it. A canoe with a motor over 25 horsepower must be registered. Enroll every motorized boat in the AIS program each year and display its decal; the annual fee is $20 for a Utah resident and $25 for a nonresident.
