Utah trailer move

Move a Road Trailer to Utah

Check the trailer's title and registration rules, then confirm its brakes, hitch, and safety chains.

Prepare the trailer before the office visit

The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

Register within 60 days after becoming a Utah resident unless the trailer qualifies for an exemption.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

A noncommercial trailer at 750 pounds or less unladen weight is title-exempt. When a Utah title is required, complete the VIN inspection on Form TC-661 unless the trailer is new and was acquired from an in-state dealer or manufacturer.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

The tow vehicle and trailer must meet Utah's stopping rules, and the combination needs a parking brake that meets the statute.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

Current Utah law exempts a non-hire trailer at 750 pounds or less shipping weight. It separately exempts a single-axle trailer unless it is commercial, for hire, or a travel, camping, or fifth-wheel trailer at 750 pounds GVWR or more. DMV's summary still says less than 750 pounds, so ask DMV about a trailer at that boundary.

Vehicle classification

Check the exact vehicle class

Use a safety chain, cable, or equivalent device in addition to the hitch. Secure it to the towing vehicle, trailer, and drawbar with enough strength to prevent separation and no more slack than turning requires. Utah lists exceptions for a fifth-wheel semitrailer, pole trailer, and bicycle-towed trailer.
