New Jersey motorcycle move

Move a Motorcycle to New Jersey

Transfer an out-of-state motorcycle and rider credential through New Jersey's separate title, insurance, registration, and self-inspection rules.

Use this order

Prepare the motorcycle before the office visit

The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

Transfer the motorcycle title and registration within 60 days after moving to New Jersey or before the prior registration expires, whichever comes first. The same earlier-of rule applies to the out-of-state driver license.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

Bring the original title, six points of identification, proof of New Jersey insurance, Universal Title Application OS/SS-UTA, and Vehicle Registration Application BA-49. A motorcycle from a non-title state can use the prior registration and a notarized bill of sale, while a financed or leased move starts with OS/SS-54 so MVC can obtain the title from the lienholder.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

New Jersey does not require motorcycles to report for periodic MVC inspection. The owner remains responsible for self-inspection and equipment compliance, and law enforcement can cite defects or unrepaired equipment.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

Title, register, and insure every road motorcycle before operating it in New Jersey. Record the lienholder's name, address, and MVC Entity Identification Number when a lien applies, and use the Improper Evidence of Ownership procedure when the ordinary ownership documents are unavailable.

Vehicle classification

Check the exact vehicle class

Transfer the motorcycle endorsement or motorcycle-only license with the out-of-state credential. MVC waives the knowledge and road tests for a current, valid, non-provisional license in good standing; a three-wheel-only or engine-size restriction remains a separate credential issue.
