Move an RV or Motorhome to New Jersey
Register an out-of-state motorhome as a New Jersey recreational passenger vehicle and keep its title, insurance, tax, inspection, and towed records separate.
Prepare the RV or motorhome before the office visit
The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.
- 1. Check when the application becomes due
Transfer the motorhome title and registration within 60 days after moving or before the prior registration expires, whichever comes first. After New Jersey registers it, complete the motorhome inspection within 14 days.
- 2. Prepare the correct ownership record
Bring the out-of-state title and any additional Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin issued for a conversion. If a lienholder or lessor holds the title, submit OS/SS-54 first and wait for MVC's notice before returning to complete the transfer.
- 3. Complete identification and inspection
Bring the motorhome to inspection within 14 days after registration with a valid license, the new registration, and proof of New Jersey insurance. Confirm the facility can physically accommodate the vehicle before the deadline.
- 4. Register the correct vehicle class
Complete BA-49 at the agency with the insurance company and policy number, odometer reading, driver license or accepted identification, and the title and tax information. MVC registers a personal motorhome at its highest passenger weight class; any towed car or trailer keeps its own record.
Check the exact vehicle class
Use the recreational passenger path only for a personal motorhome. Passenger-for-hire, commercial, bus-type, or other non-personal use can change the registration, inspection, and driver-license analysis even when the vehicle has living space.
