Move a Trailer to New Jersey

Prepare the trailer before the office visit

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Transfer the trailer registration within the 60-day new-resident vehicle window or before the prior registration expires, whichever comes first. Complete the transaction at a motor vehicle agency because trailer ownership transfers are not handled by mail.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    A private trailer under 2,500 pounds unladen must be registered but is generally title-exempt. A trailer over 2,500 pounds and every travel trailer needs the properly assigned title. A homemade trailer also needs original parts records, a notarized construction statement, certified weight slip, photographs, BA-49, OS/SS-32, and OS/SS-UTA.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    A trailer does not enter the passenger-vehicle emissions cycle, but its highway equipment must comply. Install brakes when its GVWR including load exceeds 3,000 pounds or 40 percent of the towing vehicle's gross weight, and keep the combination within New Jersey's dimensional limits.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Register the trailer as a Code 22 other non-commercial motor vehicle with its own identification, New Jersey insurance evidence, ownership record, VIN tracing or photograph, sales-tax result, and lien information. Missing evidence can trigger MVC's Improper Evidence of Ownership procedure.

Do not combine a boat with its highway trailer. MVC titles and registers the trailer by VIN, unladen weight, construction, and use, while the vessel uses a hull identification number and separate boat rules.
