- 1. Check when the application becomes due
Register the motorhome as soon as Massachusetts residency begins; there is no new-resident registration grace period. Arrange the state inspection for the first seven days after registration and convert the driver license when residency begins.
- 2. Prepare the correct ownership record
Use the out-of-state title, or the RMV's accepted registration and lien evidence when an eligible state's lienholder keeps the title. Keep the motorhome's record separate from any towed car, travel trailer, motorcycle, or boat trailer and disclose the correct lienholder on the Registration and Title Application.
- 3. Complete identification and inspection
Submit the motorhome for Massachusetts safety and any applicable emissions inspection within seven days after registration and then annually. Confirm that the station can handle the motorhome's dimensions, fuel, and weight before bringing it in.
- 4. Register the correct vehicle class
Obtain Massachusetts insurance and the agent's stamp and signature on the Registration and Title Application before the RMV transaction. A qualifying motorhome owned and registered outside Massachusetts for more than six months can use MVU-29 to document the moving-resident sales-tax exemption.
Check the exact vehicle class
A vehicle used solely as a personal or family recreational conveyance can be operated with a Massachusetts Class D license regardless of its recreational size. The exception requires exclusive personal use for family members, friends, and their effects; commercial use must be classified separately.
