  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Register a highway trailer as soon as Massachusetts residency and garaging require a Massachusetts record. The new-resident rule has no grace period, and the RMV transfer process places the inspection within seven days after registration.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    A trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating of 3,000 pounds or less is exempt from Massachusetts title and will not receive one. A trailer above 3,000 pounds must be titled; a homemade trailer above that line needs a Massachusetts-assigned VIN affixed by State Police after its eligibility and parts are inspected.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    Massachusetts subjects registered trailers to its safety-inspection framework. An ordinary trailer with an unladen weight over 10,000 pounds must have air or electric brakes, and a trailer's installed brake and breakaway equipment must work to pass inspection.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Register the trailer on its own RMV record even when it is title-exempt. Complete the Registration and Title Application, accepted ownership evidence, registered weight and use class, and any insurance verification the application requires rather than carrying the tow vehicle's plate or policy over by assumption.

Every trailer other than a semitrailer needs two independent safety chains, one on each side of the hitch. Each chain and attachment must be strong enough for the trailer and load, control the trailer if the coupling fails, keep the tow bar off the ground, and have no more slack than turning requires.
