  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Complete the trailer title and registration within Missouri's 30-day new-resident vehicle window. Do not confuse that resident deadline with the separate 30-day clock Missouri applies after a trailer purchase.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Bring the assigned out-of-state title or manufacturer statement and Form 108. If the prior state does not title or register that trailer class, ask Missouri DOR what bill of sale it will accept for the trailer's weight, type, and seller state before filing.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    Every homemade trailer must be inspected by the resident county sheriff or authorized Missouri State Highway Patrol personnel. Complete Form 5062 at the inspection, then file the title application and affix the state-issued identification plate to the trailer tongue.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Bring a paid prior-year personal property tax receipt or statement of non-assessment. Choose one-year, three-year, or permanent registration and pay its separate processing fee. Cotton trailers, tow dollies, and certain hay trailers are exceptions; do not generalize those exemptions to ordinary utility, boat, or camping trailers.

Missouri requires safety chains in addition to the primary coupling except for listed fifth-wheel, gooseneck, farm, wrecker, and unlicensed-vehicle exceptions. Brakes are required on fifth-wheel and kingpin trailers and hazardous-material trailers over 3,000 pounds; when brakes are required, the breakaway system must apply them promptly and hold for 15 minutes.
