  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Register the trailer within 30 days after becoming a Nevada resident. If the former state did not register or title this trailer class, contact Nevada DMV before the appointment to confirm the ownership evidence it will accept.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Nevada titles utility and travel trailers in the same general manner as motor vehicles. Bring the existing title or other accepted ownership document. Do not treat a towable tool as an ordinary trailer: an air compressor, tow dolly, cement mixer, or similar tool is registration-exempt unless it exceeds 70 inches in width.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    Complete Nevada's VIN inspection for an out-of-state trailer. A homemade trailer must pass inspection before title and registration; review the equipment requirements and complete Construction Affidavit VP 223 before building or presenting it.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Register a recreational or utility trailer for one year or three years. Trailers under 1,000 pounds receive a small plate. These trailers are exempt from insurance, odometer, and emissions requirements even though the title and plate are separate from the tow vehicle.

Do not use 3,000 pounds as Nevada's universal brake line. A trailer made after July 1, 1975 generally needs service brakes on all wheels unless its gross weight is under 1,500 pounds. A brake-equipped trailer, or a trailer over 3,000 pounds made after July 1, 1969, also needs brakes that apply automatically on breakaway and remain applied for at least 15 minutes.
