Start with Kia Finance America's process

The destination state controls registration and still decides what document it can use and where it must go. The lender handles the title it holds, and the two paths need to meet before the state can finish the transfer.

Kia asks your original state to print the title and mail it to Kia, and sends that request within three business days of receiving yours. Kia then mails the title within 10 business days after it arrives. Kia gives no estimate for the state's step.

Kia's notice: state DMV processing is currently ranging from 45 to 180 days for requests including state transfers and printing titles.

    Ask the destination motor vehicle office for its instructions and any form it provides, then update the mailing, billing, and garaging address in the Kia Finance America account. Kia says an out-of-state move may also require a state-to-state title transfer.

  2. 02Use the approved channel

    If the destination office needs documents from Kia Finance America, fax your written request or the office's form to (714) 368-7844, or mail it to Kia Finance America, Attn: Titles Department, 6100 W. Plano Pkwy., Ste 2000, Plano, TX 75093. Include your Kia account number, the VIN, a callback number for you, the state you are moving from, your new address, the office's name, address and phone number, and a list of the documents it needs (which may include the title, a letter of permission or a limited power of attorney). For questions about your account, Kia Finance America customer service is 866-331-5632 (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern).

  3. 03Plan for the handoff

    Kia says it sends the documents within 10 business days of receiving your request when the new office does not need the original title, when you hold the title, or when the title is paper. It ships by three-day shipping and gives tracking numbers on request. For an electronic title, Kia asks your original state to print the title and mail it to Kia, and says it will send that request within three business days of receiving yours. Kia then mails the paper title to the new office within 10 business days after it receives it. How long the state takes is up to the state, and Kia gives no estimate for that step in this answer. A separate Kia notice says state DMV processing is currently ranging from 45 to 180 days for requests that include state transfers and printing titles.
