Paid off your car in Florida? How the lien comes off the title
For an electronic lien, the lender sends the lien satisfaction to FLHSMV electronically and the title stays electronic unless the owner asks for a paper title. For a paper title, Florida law requires the lienholder that receives final payment to mail or deliver the satisfaction paperwork and the title to whoever paid the lien within 10 working days (or tell them the title is unavailable, in which case the lienholder pays for a duplicate), and the department then issues a corrected certificate with no liens to the owner.
What happens to the title in Florida
FLHSMV says all businesses that finance vehicles titled in Florida must be electronically connected to the department (effective January 1, 2013), and lien notices and releases move electronically between FLHSMV and the lienholder; individuals and lenders not normally in the financing business are exempt.

Getting a clear Florida title
Fee: $2.50 by mail to the county tax collector to print a paper title from an electronic title; online through MyDMV, one FLHSMV page says $2.50 and another says $4.50; same-day in person adds $10.
- Confirm the lender has received the final payment, then ask it to send the lien satisfaction to FLHSMV electronically (or, for a paper title, to mail you the title and satisfaction within 10 working days).
- If you want a paper title from an electronic record and no liens remain, request it through the MyDMV Portal, by mail to your county tax collector with a photocopy of your ID and a written request, or in person for same-day Fast Title service.
- If the lender does not provide the satisfaction, make a written demand; under Florida law a lienholder that does not provide it within 30 days after demand is liable for your costs and attorney fees to cancel the lien.
- If you hold a paper title, check that the lienholder entered the satisfaction on the certificate and, if you kept the title, deliver it to the lienholder within 5 days so it can do so.
- If the original certificate cannot be returned and all liens are paid, apply for a duplicate showing no liens on Form HSMV 82101 with satisfactory proof the liens are satisfied.
