Idaho lien release

Paid off your car in Idaho? How the lien comes off the title

Idaho law gives the lienholder 30 days after receiving the payoff to tell the Idaho Transportation Department the lien is discharged and to get the title to the owner. For a paper title the lienholder notes the discharge on the title, signs, and delivers it to the owner; for an electronic title it sends ITD an electronic transaction asking for a paper title free of the lien, and ITD prints and mails it the next business day. If a licensed Idaho dealer is involved, the deadline is 10 business days after the lienholder receives verified funds.

What happens to the title in Idaho

Idaho issues a paperless title when a participating lienholder records a lien; it stays electronic until the loan is paid and the lienholder sends ITD an electronic transaction asking for a paper title, which ITD then prints and mails the next business day.

Your steps

Getting a clear Idaho title

Fee: $14.00 duplicate title fee, plus county administrative fees.

  1. After your final payment clears, ask the lender to release the lien; Idaho gives the lender 30 days from receiving the payoff (10 business days if a licensed dealer is involved).
  2. If you hold a paper title, check that the lienholder noted the discharge in the designated space and signed it before it was delivered to you.
  3. If the title is electronic, ask the lender to send ITD the electronic transaction requesting a paper title, then watch for it in the mail (ITD prints and mails it the next business day).
  4. If the lender misses the deadline, contact the Idaho DMV Customer Contact Center at (208) 584-4343, or write to PO Box 7129, Boise, ID 83707-1129.
  5. If the title is lost, apply for a duplicate on the ITD duplicate title application (ITD 3367) at a county motor vehicle office or ITD; the duplicate fee is $14.00 plus county fees.
