Paid off your car in Indiana? How the lien comes off the title
For a paper title, the lienholder (financial institution or dealer) signs the lien release section on the title or provides a release letter on its letterhead, and Indiana law says it must note the discharge and deliver the certificate to the owner within 10 business days after the final payment. For an electronic lien, the lienholder releases the lien through the BMV e-lien system (the statute says within 10 days of final payment); if no other lien remains, the title stays electronic or is printed and mailed to the owner depending on the owner's chosen format, and once all liens are cleared the owner can ask for a paper title at no charge.
What happens to the title in Indiana
Indiana's e-lien system launched July 1, 2022 through approved service providers, and the BMV page says that after June 30, 2023 any lienholder that conducts at least 12 lien transactions a year must use it; e-liens must be released electronically, not on paper.

Getting a clear Indiana title
Fee: $0 to convert an electronic title to paper after liens clear ($25.00 extra for a speed title); $15.00 for a duplicate title.
- After your final payment, ask the lender for the lien release; Indiana law gives it 10 business days to release and deliver a paper title (10 days for an electronic release).
- For a paper title, check that the lender signed the lien release section on the title or gave you a release letter on its letterhead with the owner's name, release date, and the vehicle's year, make and VIN, signed by an agent or officer who lists his or her position.
- For an electronic title, ask the lender to release the lien through the e-lien system; the BMV will then print and mail a paper title if you chose paper, or keep it electronic.
- If the title stays electronic and you want paper after all liens are cleared, request a paper title from the BMV at no extra charge (a speed title adds $25.00).
- If the title is lost, apply for a duplicate (fee $15.00); a duplicate cannot change owners or liens, so a lien removal must be handled as an amendment.
