Iowa lien release

Paid off your car in Iowa? How the lien comes off the title

When a loan is paid off, the secured party must note the cancellation of its security interest on the face of the certificate of title over its signature, or use a separate cancellation of security interest (Iowa DOT form 411168), and the title goes to the next secured party, the person the owner designates in writing, or the owner. For an electronic lien the holder notifies the department or county treasurer instead. Iowa law says a lienholder that fails to release within 15 days after a written request forfeits $25 to the person who made the payment.

Your steps

Getting a clear Iowa title

Fee: $35.00 replacement title fee.

  1. After your final payment, send the lender a written request to release the security interest; Iowa law penalizes a lienholder that does not release within 15 days after a written request.
  2. Ask the lender to note the cancellation on the face of the title over its signature, or to complete the Cancellation of Security Interest (form 411168); if it holds an electronic lien it notifies the department or your county treasurer.
  3. Take the title with the cancellation, or the form 411168, to your county treasurer's office if you need a new title showing no lien.
  4. If the title was lost and a lien is open, the lienholder must apply for the replacement unless a separate notarized lien release (form 411168) is submitted; the replacement title fee listed by the county treasurers is $35.00 with a 5-day wait.
  5. If you have no proper title documents at all, ask Iowa DOT Vehicle Services (515-237-3110) whether a bonded certificate of title applies.

Iowa DOT publishes a bonded certificate of title for people who lack proper title documents. The state sets a cash or surety bond at one and a half times the vehicle's value. Cash is held for three years. Vehicles worth $1,000 or less and 12 model years or older need no bond. Iowa DOT Vehicle Services is 515-237-3110.
