Paid off your car in Kansas? How the lien comes off the title
Kansas keeps the title electronically while a lien exists, and the lienholder releases the lien through the state's E-Lien system, by a signed and notarized release sent to a county treasurer, or by email or fax to the Division of Vehicles. The release must include the name and address where the title is to be mailed, and the Division then mails a paper title to the appropriate owner, purchaser, dealer or financial institution. K.S.A. 8-1,157 gives the lienholder 3 business days to deliver a release after cash, intra-bank or wire payment and 10 business days after other payments, once it receives payment and a request for the release.
What happens to the title in Kansas
Kansas holds titles with a security interest electronically (E-Lien) and does not print paper titles for vehicles with a lien; the Division of Vehicles mails a paper title after the lien is satisfied.

Getting a clear Kansas title
Fee: $10 duplicate title fee (form TR-720B) when no lienholder remains.
- After your final payment, send the lienholder a request for the lien release (the Kansas DOR lists Form TR-155, Request for Release of Lien); the deadline is 3 business days for cash or wire payment and 10 business days for other payments.
- Give the lienholder the name and address where the title should be mailed; the release must include it.
- Confirm the lienholder released the lien through E-Lien, to a county treasurer, or by email (KDOR_LienRelease@ks.gov) or fax (785-296-2383); the Division then mails the paper title.
- If the lienholder does not deliver the release on time, file a complaint on the Lienholder Complaint Form (TR-156); Kansas can impose civil administrative penalties.
- If you need a duplicate title and the record still shows a lienholder, get the lien release first; the Division cannot issue a duplicate while a lienholder appears, and the application is form TR-720B.
