Louisiana lien release

Paid off your car in Louisiana? How the lien comes off the title

For an electronic lien, once the loan is satisfied the lienholder sends an electronic message to its contracted public tag agent, which lets the lien be released and a clear title printed and mailed. For a paper title, state law says the first lienholder delivers the title with a proper release of the lien executed on it to the registered owner if no other lien exists (or to the next-ranking lienholder).

What happens to the title in Louisiana

Louisiana OMV says participation in electronic lien and title has been mandatory for lenders since January 1, 2010; a lender contracts with a public tag agent, and OMV's page says ELT is for vehicles having only one lien.

Your steps

Getting a clear Louisiana title

Fee: $68.50 title fee plus an $8.00 handling fee, as OMV lists for titling.

  1. Ask your lender to confirm it sent the electronic lien release through its public tag agent, or that it signed the lien release on your paper title and mailed it.
  2. Watch for the clear title to arrive by mail; if you hold a paper title with the lien release executed on it, keep it as your clear title.
  3. If the title never arrives or is lost, contact the Office of Motor Vehicles at (225) 925-6146 or a public tag agent about a duplicate title.
  4. Use the OMV Vehicle Application (DPSMV 1799) when OMV or a public tag agent asks for a title application.

How long the lender has

We did not find a Louisiana release deadline we could verify.

Ask the lender for the date it released the lien and how it was sent, then check the Louisiana title record before starting a new request.

Under La. R.S. 32:708(B)(2), OMV can issue a duplicate certificate of title showing the lien cancelled when the owner shows they cannot get a duplicate or release because the lienholder is no longer in existence and the secured party of record has filed a termination statement, along with the other conditions the statute lists.
