Paid off your car in Massachusetts? How the lien comes off the title
When a security interest is satisfied, the lienholder must execute a release within 3 days after the owner's demand and in any event within 10 days after satisfaction. If the lienholder holds the paper title, it mails or delivers the release and the title to the next lienholder or, if none, to the owner. For electronically recorded liens, state law lets the registrar handle satisfaction without automatically printing a paper title, but the owner can get a paper certificate on request.
What happens to the title in Massachusetts
Massachusetts law authorizes the registrar to run an electronic security-interest recording system and to skip mailing a paper title while a lien is recorded. The statute does not require lienholders to use it.

Getting a clear Massachusetts title
Confirm any title fee with the state before you apply.
- Confirm the date your lender received your final payoff, since the 10-day release clock runs from satisfaction of the loan.
- Ask your lender to send you the signed release and the title, or to confirm it released the lien electronically to the RMV.
- If the lender misses the deadline, you, or a person you authorize to receive the title, can file a complaint against the lienholder with the registrar under M.G.L. c.90D section 24A.
- If you need a paper title and the lienholder does not hold one, apply to the RMV for a duplicate certificate of title; a duplicate is mailed to the first lienholder named on it, or to the owner if none.

- Will Massachusetts mail me the title after I pay off the loan?

- What if my lender went out of business?
- Massachusetts law lets the registrar issue a title with a bond instead of withholding it when there is doubt about ownership or undisclosed security interests: the bond is 1.5 times the vehicle's value, held for three years, and protects prior lienholders and later buyers (c.90D section 12). Contact the RMV before relying on this route.
