New Jersey lien release

Paid off your car in New Jersey? How the lien comes off the title

For a financed vehicle the MVC sends the original title to the lienholder. When the loan is fulfilled, state law says the secured party delivers the certificate of ownership to the buyer with evidence of satisfaction or termination of the security interest, and files a notice with the MVC director within 15 days. MVC's duplicate-title page lists a missing lien release letter, when the MVC record does not show the lien as satisfied, as a common reason applications are rejected.

Your steps

Getting a clear New Jersey title

Fee: $60 duplicate title fee, with mail-in duplicates taking about 8 to 12 weeks.

  1. Ask your lender for the certificate of ownership with the lien released and for a lien release letter.
  2. If the title is lost, apply for a duplicate with the Universal Title Application (OS/SS-UTA) by appointment at a motor vehicle agency or by mail, and include the lender's lien release letter if the MVC record does not show the lien as satisfied.
  3. Note that a duplicate title issued while a lien still shows is mailed to the lienholder, so make sure the lien is recorded as satisfied first.
  4. Call the MVC Duplicate Title Unit at 609-633-8275 for help.
