Oklahoma lien release

Paid off your car in Oklahoma? How the lien comes off the title

Oklahoma law requires the lender to furnish a release of its security interest to Service Oklahoma and mail a copy to the borrower's last-known address within 7 business days after payoff. If the lien was entered electronically, the lender releases it electronically; if a paper title is involved, the owner mails the signed lien release to Service Oklahoma, which removes the lien from its records at no charge. The owner can then ask for a new title without the lien.

Your steps

Getting a clear Oklahoma title

Fee: $11.00 for a new title without the lien; no fee to record a lien release.

  1. Ask your lender for a signed lien release (it must identify you, the lender, and the vehicle) or confirm it released the lien electronically.
  2. Mail the lien release to Service Oklahoma, Motor Vehicle Liens, P.O. Box 26800, Oklahoma City, OK 73126 (no fee to record the release).
  3. If the lien is paid off but no paper title was issued, request an electronic title release through Service Oklahoma so the electronic title is in your name with no lien.
  4. To get a printed title without the lien, take the lien release and current title to the Service Oklahoma licensing office on N Classen in Oklahoma City or to a licensed operator and pay the $11 title fee.

How long the lender has

Oklahoma gives the lienholder 7 days after payoff.

The secured party must furnish a release to Service Oklahoma and mail a copy to the debtor within 7 business days after the security interest is satisfied, and the statute adds a $100 penalty and, after written demand, $100 per day up to $1,500 or the vehicle's value, whichever is less. Compare other states' procedures

If the secured party cannot provide a release, Oklahoma law lets the owner submit an affidavit that the security interest has been satisfied and explaining why a release cannot be obtained, along with supporting documents Service Oklahoma requires, a title application, and fees. Service Oklahoma then issues a new certificate of title without the satisfied lien. Ask Service Oklahoma which supporting documents it wants for a defunct lender.
