Paid off your car in South Dakota? How the lien comes off the title
If the lender uses ELT, it sends an electronic lien release to the Motor Vehicle Division through its provider, and a paper title is printed and mailed to the location the lender named in the release, normally the owner. If the lienholder holds a paper title, it must have the lien released by the county treasurer within 20 days after final payment; if the owner holds the title, the lienholder mails the owner a signed release within 20 days and the owner takes the release and title to any county treasurer. No fee applies to releasing a lien.
What happens to the title in South Dakota
Lenders may use a third-party ELT provider to receive electronic notices, or note liens directly with the county treasurer without one; no paper title is printed while a lien is noted unless a state-law exception applies, and the title prints and mails to the owner when the lender releases the lien.
